What Is Hype on YouTube?

Hype is a fan-powered visibility feature designed to help emerging creators get more exposure.

When a viewer “hypes” a video they enjoy, that video earns Hype points. Those points can push the video onto a special weekly leaderboard, increasing its chances of being discovered by new audiences.

Unlike ads or paid promotion, Hype is driven entirely by audience engagement.

Who Can Receive Hype Points?

Hype is currently limited to creators who meet specific eligibility requirements.

To receive Hype points, a channel must:

  • Be part of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP)

  • Have fewer than 500,000 subscribers

  • Be in good standing with no active community guideline strikes

To qualify for the YouTube Partner Program, a channel must meet one of the following thresholds:

  • 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months

  • 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views in the past 90 days

There is no additional subscriber minimum beyond YPP. Once approved and under 500,000 subscribers, a channel is eligible to receive Hype points if the feature is available in their region.

What Videos Are Eligible?

Not every upload can be hyped.

Only new long-form videos are eligible, typically within the first seven days after publishing. This window encourages early engagement and rewards creators who consistently release fresh content.

Viewer Limits and Leaderboards

Each viewer can hype up to three different videos per week.

Videos that receive Hype points are placed on a ranked leaderboard within YouTube’s Explore section. This added visibility can introduce the content to viewers who may never have encountered the channel otherwise.

Hyped videos also display a special “Hyped” badge across YouTube, signaling strong fan support and momentum.

How Hype Helps Smaller Creators

One of the most important aspects of Hype is that YouTube intentionally gives bonus weight to smaller channels.

Creators with fewer subscribers receive a larger growth boost from each Hype point, helping level the playing field against larger, more established accounts.
