Likes can be encouraging, but they do not tell the whole story. Learn which social media metrics matter for your business goals, from reaching new customers to generating inquiries and sales.
A post gets 100 likes. Another gets 12 likes, three saves, and two inquiries from potential customers. Which one performed better?
It depends on what you wanted the post to accomplish.
Likes are useful feedback, but they are only one piece of the picture. If your goal is to build awareness, reach and impressions can help you understand how many people saw your content. If you want people to consider your products or services, saves, shares, comments, and profile visits may tell you more. If you want to generate business, link clicks, quote requests, calls, and actual sales deserve closer attention.
Hootsuite's 2026 guide to engagement rate explains that engagement can be calculated in several ways, including against reach, impressions, followers, or video views. Those formulas answer different questions, so be consistent when comparing results. LinkedIn's official analytics documentation also distinguishes metrics such as impressions, members reached, clicks, and engagement rate.
What This Means for Your Business
Before your next post, decide what success looks like. Are you trying to introduce your business to new people, demonstrate your expertise, start conversations, drive traffic to your website, or book more work?
For example, a welder posting a fabrication video might be trying to attract future customers. A large number of views is encouraging, but a message asking for a quote is a more direct business opportunity. Meanwhile, a small business sharing a useful tutorial may value saves and shares because they suggest people want to revisit or pass along the information.
You do not need expensive analytics software to get started. Most major platforms provide built-in insights. Pick the metrics that match your goal, compare similar posts over time, and look for patterns. One successful post is a useful clue, not a guarantee that repeating it will produce the same result.
Today's 5-Minute Task
Improve your measurement habits.
Open your most recent five social media posts. Choose the one business goal that matters most to you right now, then review the metric most closely connected to that goal.
Awareness: reach or impressions.
Engagement: comments, saves, or shares.
Website traffic: link clicks.
New business: qualified inquiries, leads, or sales.
Write down which post performed best against that goal. Use that result to guide your next piece of content instead of simply copying whichever post received the most likes.
