〽️ YouTube Changes What Counts as a View

YouTube announced that beginning August 24, 2026, a “view” is counted from the first frame of a video across Shorts, long-form videos, podcasts, and livestreams. The previous definition, which required a viewer to click to watch or continue beyond the initial seconds, is now called an “engaged view.” YouTube says engaged views continue to be the metric used for determining eligibility to earn from content. For welding businesses and trade creators, this is important because a raw view count no longer tells the whole story. A Short appearing in someone's feed can now register a view immediately, but that does not necessarily mean the person actually watched the content. When evaluating whether a video worked, look beyond views and examine engaged views, audience retention, watch time, subscribers gained, comments, shares, and whether viewers continued to another video. This is especially important when comparing videos published before and after the change.

What this means for your business

Do not judge your YouTube strategy by views alone. Pick your five most recent videos and start recording engaged views, average view duration, retention, subscribers gained, and traffic sources alongside total views. Over time, that will give you a much better picture of which welding projects, tutorials, product demonstrations, and shop content actually hold people's attention.
