〽️Slag Tag Media Weekly Wrap-Up: AI, Instagram and the Shift Toward Smarter Content
This week reinforced a trend we have been watching closely: social platforms are giving businesses and creators more tools to understand their content and use AI to improve it. Instagram introduced an AI creative assistant inside its Edits app that can analyze performance information such as views, likes, retention and shares, then provide suggestions for content ideas, hooks, captions, trending audio and scripts. The Verge Instagram also continued expanding how tagged content can be used, including the ability to add tagged posts to your own profile grid. Brandwatch
Another major development was Meta's continued expansion of its AI ecosystem. Meta has been moving beyond simple AI chat into tools designed to perform tasks and assist users more proactively. That is important for small businesses because the future of social media management may involve AI helping with research, planning, analysis and repetitive work rather than simply writing captions. Meanwhile, broader digital research continues to show just how significant social media and AI have become, with 5.79 billion social media user identities and an estimated 2.42 billion active generative AI users globally as of April 2026. Three things worth knowing this week
1. Instagram is putting more AI directly into the content workflow.
The new creative assistant in Edits is designed to use your own performance data to make recommendations. That is potentially more useful than generic AI advice because the suggestions can be connected to what is actually happening on your account. The Verge
2. Instagram is making tagged content more valuable.
Being tagged in somebody else's content can now provide another opportunity to showcase that content on your own profile. For welders and trade businesses, this makes customer projects, collaborations, vendor relationships and event content potentially more useful as part of your overall profile. Brandwatch
3. AI is becoming part of the business workflow, not just the writing workflow.
Meta's development of AI agents such as Muse points toward a future where AI can assist with multi-step tasks. That could eventually have a meaningful impact on small businesses that do not have dedicated marketing staff. Business Insider
Trend to watch next week
AI-assisted content strategy.
We are moving beyond “AI wrote my caption” territory. The more interesting development is AI looking at what happened, identifying patterns, suggesting what to make next, and eventually helping execute parts of the process. For a small trade business, that could mean less time spent figuring out what to post and more time actually creating useful content.
One action for welding and trade businesses
Look at your last five social media posts and identify which one generated the most meaningful response.
Don't just look at likes. Look for comments, shares, saves, questions, profile visits or people asking about your work. Then ask yourself one question:
“Can I make another piece of content based on why this one worked?”
That five-minute exercise can be more valuable than randomly creating another post.

ESAB
ESAB continued using social media as more than a product catalog this week. Its LinkedIn activity combined product promotion with specific customer incentives, including the Burn & Earn campaign for the Ruffian EMP 270G, while other recent posts have focused on helping customers understand the differences between welding helmet options. LinkedIn
What stands out is the combination of product education, a specific reason to act, and content written around the welder rather than simply around the product. That is a useful lesson for smaller welding businesses. You do not need ESAB's budget to use the same basic strategy. Show the product or service, explain why it matters, and give the audience a reason to care.

Today's 5-Minute Task
Go back through your last five social media posts.
Pick the one that performed best and write down one reason you think it worked.
Was it the subject? The video? The project? The hook? The person in it? The question you asked? The timing?
You don't need to figure it all out today. Just start paying attention to what your own audience is telling you.
