Social media is becoming more than a place to post updates and watch videos. People are increasingly using it to decide where to eat, what to buy, and which local businesses are worth checking out. A new feature from TikTok is a good example of where that discovery process is heading.
On October 29, 2026, TikTok announced Must Eat, an in-app restaurant guide built from more than 40 million dining-related posts, reviews, and comments. It launched in the areas around New York City, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Users can browse restaurant recommendations, filter by cuisine and price, view related TikTok videos, and make reservations through OpenTable at select restaurants. The guide currently focuses on restaurants in those three regions, not every type of small business or every U.S. location.
One detail stands out: TikTok says restaurants cannot pay to be featured in Must Eat. The guide is built around conversations and content already happening on the platform, with independent restaurants and local specialties receiving priority. That does not mean every customer video will lead to a recommendation or that we know exactly how TikTok weighs each post. It does show how customer-created content can become part of a platform's discovery experience, rather than simply disappearing into someone's feed after a few days.
This development is specific to restaurants, but the lesson applies more broadly. Your business should be easy to recognize and understand when someone discovers it through a video, a customer recommendation, or a search. Show what you do, identify the products or services you offer, include relevant location details, and make it clear how someone can contact you. A fabrication shop could show a finished project and explain where it serves customers. A maker could show a product being created and identify where it is available. Encourage genuine customer feedback, respond to questions, and always get permission before resharing someone else's content.
What This Means for Your Business
You do not need to chase every new discovery feature. Start by making your existing social media presence useful to someone who has never heard of you.
Check that your business name, location, service area, contact information, and descriptions are accurate. When creating content, use natural language that explains what people are seeing. A video of a custom railing is more useful when viewers know it is a custom railing, where the work was completed, and how to request something similar.
Customer recommendations are valuable because they offer a perspective your own advertising cannot completely reproduce. Build relationships with customers, make it easy for them to share their experiences, and treat their feedback as part of your online reputation.
Today’s 5-Minute Task
Connect with one customer who has mentioned your business online.
Find a recent tag, comment, or public review. Take a moment to thank that person with a genuine response. If they shared a photo or video of your work, ask permission before resharing it to your own page.
It is a small interaction, but it reinforces the relationship behind the content. Social media should actually be social.
